Frequently Asked Questions
General Headshot Information
What makes a good headshot?
A good headshot does more than show your appearance. It reflects personality, professionalism, and confidence. For corporate clients, a strong headshot communicates trust and expertise. For performers, it gives casting directors and clients a glimpse of your unique character and range.
The best headshots are well-lit with balanced composition, include appropriate body language, have strong eye-contact, genuine expression, convey confidence and success, and create an immediate connection with viewers.
Equally important are the subtle details, as they infer meaning to the viewer. Clean, well-fitted clothing signals professionalism and attention to detail. Accurate colour grading ensures your skin tone and clothing appear natural and flattering. A properly retouched image removes distractions without altering your identity. These small refinements work together to elevate the overall impression, helping your headshot stand out and leave a lasting impact.
How often should I update my headshots?
Updated headshots show that you’re active and invested in your professional image. If you’re unsure about how often to refresh your headshot, a good rule of thumb is every 2 to 3 years for business professionals. However, if your appearance changes significantly sooner, for example, if you change your hairstyle, grow a beard, start wearing glasses, or anything else that makes you look noticeably different, you should update your headshot to keep it current.
Actors and models typically update headshots more often; generally every year, to keep their look fresh and in line with industry trends. Casting directors especially value up-to-date, accurate images.
You may also want to refresh your headshots when you reach a major milestone or go through a professional shift. Whether it’s a promotion that calls for a more executive image or a transition from corporate to creative, a new headshot is a great way to mark that evolution and reflect your new positioning.
Why is a traditional headshot better than using AI-generated images?
A traditional professional headshot captures the real you, authentically, professionally, and accurately. While AI-generated images may look impressive at first glance, they often feel overly processed, lack emotional depth, and fail to truly represent who you are.
Despite recent advances, AI struggles to recreate specific faces with precision. It introduces subtle inaccuracies and over-perfects features, which results in an unnatural, fake-looking image that lacks the authenticity essential to a great headshot. AI also applies generic styling and lighting, without considering your unique features, skin tone, or body shape.
In contrast, a professionally taken headshot is thoughtfully crafted using expert lighting, composition, and direction. It presents your true appearance with flattering accuracy, communicates trust and credibility, and creates an immediate sense of connection with viewers. Whether you’re a business professional or performer, people respond to real images — not artificial approximations. Authenticity builds trust, and trust opens doors.
What is a media kit or press kit, and do I need one as an artist or performer?
A media kit, also called a press kit or EPK (Electronic Press Kit), is a collection of promotional materials that an artist, performer, or public figure uses to introduce themselves to the media, venues, or potential clients, as well as for general marketing and promotion purposes. It usually includes professional photos, headshots, and possibly some creative shots, a bio or about info, as well as press releases, music or video links, and contact details. We offer a Media & Press Kit package for artists and performers who need a complete set of images for their portfolio or campaign. These sessions are more in depth, to capture a wider variety of shots, and often include custom styles and lighting to create a desired look and image. If you’re an artist trying to get noticed, a media kit is often essential as it provides promoters and journalists with a ready-made package about you. Your media kit shoot with us will include 12 fully retouched images that you can use in your EPK, album covers, flyers, social media, and more.
Headshot Bookings and Session Details
How do I book a headshot session?
Booking a session is simple. You can use the Book Now links on our website or contact us by email or phone to schedule your shoot. We’ll discuss your needs, whether corporate, actor, or media kit, and find a suitable date. A 50% deposit is required to confirm your booking. Once you complete that, you’ll receive a confirmation along with tips to prepare for your session.
Where do the shoots take place?
We offer shoots either at our modern commercial studio in Woodstock, Cape Town, or at a location of your choosing.
Where is your studio located?
Our studio is based at The Palms Lifestyle Centre, 145 Sir Lowry Road in Woodstock, Cape Town. We’re on the first floor in unit A042, just above Cooktastic. The studio is modern, fully equipped, and designed to provide a comfortable, professional experience.
Is parking available at your studio?
Yes, there is plenty of secure undercover parking available within The Palms Centre. The entrance to the parking is on Sir Lowry Road, and from there you can access the building and take the stairs or lift to our studio on the first floor.
How long is a typical headshot session?
The length of the session depends on the package you choose. We offer quick sessions of 30 minutes, great for a basic LinkedIn headshot, up to longer shoots of 2 hours or more for more extensive packages. Short sessions are ideal if you need just a couple of good shots, while longer sessions allow for multiple looks, outfit changes, and different styles. We’ll help you choose the right package based on your needs.
Do I need to pay a deposit to secure my booking?
Yes, we require a 50% deposit to confirm and hold your session date. This deposit ensures your time slot is reserved for you. The remaining balance is due when we deliver your retouched images edit previews. If we don’t receive a deposit within 24 hours of booking, the tentative slot may be released to provide the time for another customer, so it’s best to pay the deposit promptly to secure your session.
What if I need to reschedule or cancel my session?
We understand that plans can change. If you need to reschedule, just let us know as soon as possible. We allow one complimentary reschedule if you give at least 2 business days’ notice. For cancellations, if you cancel more than one week in advance, we can refund your deposit minus any costs incurred. Cancellations within one week of the shoot may lose a portion of the deposit, and last-minute cancellations, within 2 business days, typically forfeit the full deposit. Our aim is to be fair, so if an emergency arises, talk to us, and we’ll do our best to accommodate a new date.
Do you offer on-site headshot sessions for companies or teams?
Yes, we do! We can bring the studio to you. For corporate clients who need headshots of multiple team members, it’s often easier for us to set up at your office. We have a full mobile setup with backdrops and professional lighting that we can assemble in a conference room or open area at your location. This way, your whole team can get their headshots with minimal disruption to the workday. We typically recommend on-site shoots for group over 10 to 12 people, as it saves everyone travel time and ensures a consistent look for all employee headshots. Before the shoot, we will coordinate on space requirements but an area larger than 5m x 3.5m with good ceiling height is ideal for our setup. We can also do a mix of individual headshots and group photos if needed. Contact us to discuss your team’s size and needs, and we’ll customize a package for you. We’ve done on-location shoots for companies big and small, and we’re happy to accommodate your scheduling, even if it means multiple days or a recurring arrangement for new hires.
Headshot Preparation and Shoot Day
How should I prepare for my headshot session?
A little preparation goes a long way! Get a good night’s sleep before the shoot so you look refreshed; don’t get a haircut or wax on the day of or before the shoot; stay well hydrated; use a good moisturizer in the days before the shoot; remove any dry skin on your lips; use eye drops to reduce any redness or puffiness in your eyes; and groom facial (and nasal) hair. If you have oily skin use a mattifying cream or shine reducing powder before the shoot. We have more extensive tips on our website https://headshots.capetown/headshot-tips/ . But don’t worry; we’ll guide you through everything on the day of the shoot.
What should I wear for the shoot?
Your wardrobe choice is important for great headshots. We recommend wearing solid, neutral colors that don’t distract from your face. Avoid busy patterns, prints or logos. Dress for your industry or the image you want to present. For example, corporate professionals might choose polished business attire, while actors or artists might opt for something that reflects their personality, yet is still simple. Ensure your clothes are clean and well-ironed, as wrinkles and discolouration will stand out in high-resolution photos. Feel free to bring several outfits to the studio or send us photos of what your are planning for feedback. What works in person might look different on camera due to the properties of the fabric, so having options is helpful. We’ll help you decide which outfits will look best on camera. Finally, choose necklines and sleeve lengths that flatter you, and avoid anything you feel uncomfortable in. If you feel confident in your outfit, it will show in the photos.
Do I need to bring my own wardrobe, or do you supply clothing?
Clients are responsible for bringing their own wardrobe to the shoot. We do not supply clothing, as personal style and fit are an important part of making your headshots authentic and effective. However, we are more than happy to guide you in selecting what to bring. If you’re unsure, feel free to bring a few extra options and we will help you choose the best looks on the day.
Can I bring multiple outfits for different looks?
Absolutely. We encourage it. Bringing multiple outfits allows you to achieve various looks from the same session. Many of our packages include time for two or three outfit changes. For instance, you might choose one formal business look, one casual or creative look, and perhaps a third option if time allows. Having options is always helpful. Sometimes a coulor or style you love may not translate well on camera, so we can switch to an alternative. We have a clothing rail and changing area in the studio. Always allow enough time when selecting the headshot package to give you time for the options you wish to include. The more variety we capture, the more selection you’ll have in your final images.
Is professional hair and makeup available?
Yes, we work with The Makeup Touch and can arrange professional hair and makeup for your session if you’d like. They provide professional hair and makeup artists who can come in to style you before and during the shoot. This service is optional and comes at an additional cost. Many clients, especially corporate professionals and male clients, prefer to do without a makeup artist and come groomed as they normally would for work. Others, particularly actors or those doing a media kit shoot, often appreciate having a makeup artist to ensure they look their best on camera. It’s completely up to you and your comfort level. If you’re doing your own makeup, we recommend a natural, polished look. A good concealer for blemishes and a matte powder to reduce shine can help. For your hair, style it in a way that makes you feel confident. You can do minor hair and outfit adjustments during the shoot, but being camera-ready will make the session smoother and save time. Please let us know in advance if you want to add hair and makeup services so we can schedule the artist.
I’m not comfortable in front of a camera. Will you guide me during the shoot?
Definitely! You’re in good hands. It’s normal to feel a bit camera-shy if you’re not used to photo shoots. Our priority is not just to take great photos but also to help you feel at ease and enjoy the experience. We create a fun, relaxed environment and guide you throughout the session. At the start of the session we provide introductory training on how to pose for the style of headshots you want and guide you throughout the shoot. You don’t need any modeling experience at all. As we shoot, we review images with you on a large screen and make adjustments until we’re capturing shots that you love. Most clients say the session turns out to be much more comfortable and enjoyable than they expected. So, even if you feel nervous when you arrive, you’ll leave feeling like a star with photos to match.
After the Shoot & Deliverables
How many photos will I receive, and can I choose my favorites?
The number of final photos you receive depends on the package you choose. Each of our packages includes a set number of fully retouched high-resolution images. For example, a basic package may include 2 final images, a standard package may include 4, and our larger packages go up to 8 or 12 retouched images, as listed on our site. During the shoot we take from 30 to 300+ shots in total, depending on the session length. Shortly after the session, we provide you with a link to an online share containing watermarked proof shots from which you select a number of images for retouching, based on the number of final images included in your package. If you want more images than your package includes, you can purchase additional retouched photos for an extra cost. Additional information about our retouching as well as pricing for additional images is online at https://headshots.capetown/headshot-retouching-and-editing/
Will my headshots be retouched?
Absolutely! All the final images you receive will be professionally edited and retouched. Our retouching process focuses on enhancing the photos while making sure you look like yourself. We believe in natural-looking results, not overly airbrushed faces. Retouching usually includes adjusting lighting and color, removing temporary blemishes, softening fine lines, and tidying up hair or clothing as needed. The aim is to produce the best version of you in the photo. We also pay attention to details like whitening eyes and teeth slightly, reducing under-eye circles, and ensuring the focus is on your eyes and smile. If you have specific concerns, like removing scars or permanent blemishes, let us know, and we’ll see what we can do in editing. We handle all our retouching in-house to maintain a high professional standard. Although when requested, we are happy to help you “lose a few pounds”, we avoid overly Photoshop’ing or changing your face.
How will I receive my images?
All images will be provided electronically via Dropbox share as standard, or using WeTransfer by request. Images are supplied in JPG file format in sRGB encoding. Final retouch images included in each package are supplied in high resolution at 7680 pixels along the longest side. Team headshots for electronic use only are typically provided in High-Definition 1920 pixel size.
Do I receive all the unedited and RAW images?
No, we don’t provide unedited or RAW images as part of our standard packages. Our service includes expert curation and professional retouching to ensure you receive only the highest-quality final images. Sharing unedited files can misrepresent the quality of our work and your personal brand. Any additional images that you would like retouched are charged per image for the retouching required. If you require access to unedited images for a specific commercial purpose, we’re happy to discuss this under a custom licensing agreement.
How long does it take to get the final images?
We take pride in our quick turnaround. In most cases, you will receive the selection set of proof images gallery (the unedited preview images for you to choose from) by the end of the next business day after your shoot. Once you tell us which images you’d like retouched, we start editing. The final retouched images are typically delivered within about 5 business days from when you send us your choices. It can often be sooner, depending on our editing schedule. If you have an urgent deadline, like a press release or audition, we can often provide an overnight editing service at an additional fee per image. Just be sure to discuss this with us in advance so we can confirm availability and book in the editing time.
Will I get the unedited or RAW photos from the session?
Our standard practice is to provide you with the edited final images you select, rather than every shot we took. We do not release unedited RAW files or every single photo from the shoot. This is common in professional photography. Part of our service is to sort through the session to find the best images and apply our professional editing to deliver a polished final product. We believe in quality over quantity, so you’ll get the shots that meet our high standards for lighting, expression, and composition. That said, you will have plenty of options. You’ll see all the top proof images and choose your favorites for editing. If you need access to additional images or unedited files, please talk to us in advance. In special cases, we can arrange a custom agreement or purchase of unedited images. However, general feedback from clients indicates that they prefer to let us handle the fine-tuning and enjoy the best pictures, rather than sort through hundreds of shots. Remember, the final edited headshots are the ones intended for use; those will be high resolution and optimized, while unedited shots are like unfinished work.
Can I use the images for LinkedIn, my company website, and prints?
Yes, definitely. Once you receive your final images, they are yours to use for any of your personal branding needs. We deliver the headshots in high-resolution JPEG format suitable for print, and we also provide web-optimized versions ideal for online use. You can update your LinkedIn profile, company bio page, acting portfolio, or any social media with them. If you’re an actor or model, you can make prints (like 8x10s or comp cards) from the high-res files. For companies, the images can be used on your website, in press releases, and other marketing materials. We grant you a broad personal-use license to use the photos for self-promotion and business profiles. The only restriction is that the photos cannot be resold or used commercially by third parties without permission, since we retain the copyright. For your professional use, you have full rights. By default, we also reserve the right to use some of the photos in our portfolio or marketing, such as on our website gallery or Instagram. We’re proud of our work. However, if you prefer your images to remain private, just let us know, and we’re happy to respect that.
